Hank Mobley was one of the great masters of the tenor saxophone, a key figure in hard bop, with a warm, subtle sound of rare elegance. His fluid and refined phrasing – often described as that of a ‘middleweight champion’ of the tenor saxophone – made him one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz and an absolute benchmark for his instrument.
Bart Defoort, for his part, is one of the most classy and respected musicians in the kingdom; Mobley’s repertoire therefore suits him down to the ground. For our ‘Nostalgia in Grand Place’ series, he brings this exhilarating repertoire to life, accompanied by a meticulously selected rhythm section and our artistic director on piano.
