‘Boogalou’ pays tribute to a giant of soulful, celebratory jazz: Lou Donaldson, who passed away last year.
Having begun his career alongside Thelonious Monk and Milt Jackson, amongst others, and bringing a blues-influenced phrasing to the language of bebop, Lou Donaldson went on to join the Jazz Messengers and played a key part in the golden age of hard bop, recording a host of albums for Blue Note.
Donaldson made his mark by performing mainly with organists in bands brimming with soul and groove, paving the way for a whole generation of musicians keen to blend the sophistication of hard bop with irresistibly danceable music.
A delightfully exhilarating sound to (re)discover with a well-rehearsed band ready to set the stage alight as winter fast approaches.
