On 26 May, Sonny Rollins passed away at the age of 95. He was the last of the tenor saxophone greats, the composer of tunes that have become some of the most frequently played standards in the repertoire (Oleo, Doxy, St. Thomas, Airegin, Hot Waltz, Tenor Madness). His influence has spanned generations, and legend has it that he developed such a rich tone by practising beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, thereby drowning out the noise of New York traffic. One of his biggest Belgian fans, Jordi Grognard, is now taking on this musical icon for an afternoon where those familiar, crystal-clear melodies will ring out at the Toots.
